Internal Medicine: Explore the Role of Internists - DOC Medical Centre

What is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine is a specialty in which physicians apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to manage patients (17 years old and above) with a very broad range of symptoms. Physicians who specialize in this field are called “Internists”. They have undergone rigorous years of training that covers all systems of the entire human body including: Neurology, Cardiovascular, Endocrinology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Gastrointestinal, Hematology, Rheumatology, Immunologic, Allergies and Infectious Diseases. Internists are the frontrunners in establishing correct diagnoses based on deep understanding of the human body organs, processes and metabolic-biochemical interactions. They manage an extensive spectrum of patients from the baseline disease prevention and health maintenance to simple acute cases in the outpatient clinic, to the more complex conditions in urgent care department, and to the most complicated critical outcomes in the Hospital. Internists are mostly associated with General Physicians. These doctors usually work in a team. Having longer education period and clinical training, the Internists are usually the consultants guiding the team.
